Malaga otherwise known as the Costa del Sol is located on the southern coast of Spain. Its location coupled with excellent weather and beaches makes Malaga one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. However, Malaga is also well known as Costa del Golf with a glut of world class golf courses in the region. For this reason many visitors choose to take up car hire in Malaga airport with a number of options available from daily, weekly and longer term hire.
With warm weather throughout the year and miles of beautiful sandy beaches tourists flock back to the area perennially with a number of world class resorts within easy reach of the international airport. Resorts such as Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Marbella and Fuengirola welcome tourists throughout the year with Puerto Banus accommodating a more luxury crowd.
One of the more popular golf courses in the region – the Estepona features the longest hole in Spain. The Estepona lies one mile from the town centre and the par 5 third hole dubbed the ski run stretches for 568 metres. The Estepona is set against the backdrop of the Sierra Bermeja mountain range but also boasts sea views throughout the course. Wide fairways and large greens provide a challenge for all levels of golfer. Further up the coast the more elite Rio Real course is also one of the oldest in the region. The par 72 course officially opened back in 1965 and being fairly flat attracts crowds throughout the season. To get to and from the 40+ courses in the area it is best to pick up car hire in Malaga airport. There are a number of rental companies with competitive deals throughout the tourist season.
The Costa del Sol is not just for golfing. There are sites and attractions in the area that cater to all crowds. There are numerous theme parks and attractions in and around Malaga catering to the tourist trade and locals alike. Water parks, safaris, karting and even a crocodile park all ply for tourist traffic. Cultural and historical sites also attract visitors including the ever popular Alhambra in Granada. Granada is just a 90 minute drive from picking up your car hire in Malaga airport. The Alhambra itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site and receives over 12 million visitors a year. Despite such heavy numbers tickets for the Alhambra remain in short supply and it is recommended to book well in advance.
Malaga city itself has a lot to offer with many monuments and tourist attractions. Malaga is also a shopping Mecca with numerous shopping centres around the city. Whatever your reason for travelling to Spain, Malaga and the Costa del Sol has it all.
